Chinchilla Cages

Chinchillas need plenty of room and unless you purchase one of the larger cages you should let your chinchilla out at least once a day for a good run around. Like all pets you should purchase the biggest cage you can afford and have available room for to help keep your chinchilla both happy and healthy.

Chinchillas don't smell but you should still clean out the cage once a week. Many of our Chinchilla cages have slide out trays in the bottom so cleaning is quick and easy.

Keep the cage out of direct sunlight in the summer and make sure there is some ventilation in the room. Chinchillas are quick to get heat stroke and 75f can be fatal. The cage should also be in a quite area as they do not like noisy environments.

Chinchillas are members of the rodent family and originally come from South America where they lived in the Andes mountain range. They were named after the local Chincha Indians by the Spanish explorers who discovered them in the 1500's.

They were almost hunted to extinction for their pelts but are now a protected species.

Did you know? In 1923 a mining engineer named Mr. Chapman was granted permission by the Chilean government to take 11 Chinchillas back home with him to America to see if he could domesticate them and all pet Chinchillas throughout the world today are descendents of those 11.
