Ferrets make wonderful pets and are happy to live indoors or out as long as they have somewhere warm, dry and comfortable to sleep. They are extremely sociable and make great companions living up to 12 years with the right care.
Ferrets are very clean animals and will only soil in one spot. A litter tray can be used in a corner of the cage and will make cleaning a lot easier.
Ferrets love to sleep and can do as much as 20 hours per day so somewhere warm and snug for them is a must. Their bodies are poor heat regulators so heat can be a problem for ferrets. Keep out of direct sunlight and if you decide on an indoor cage, make sure it is in a ventilated room during the summer months.
As already said, ferrets are extremely playful and when kept with other ferrets they will spend most of their time awake running around chasing each other and play fighting. If you are keeping a single ferret then it is important to keep him stimulated. Add balls and tubes for them to play with and with a harness can be taken for walks to help prevent boredom.
Health Alert for Jills - Female ferrets (Jills) that are not neutered, either have to be mated or serviced using a full or vasectomised male or have a hormone injection, known as a jill jab, to take them out of season. Otherwise, they fall victim to a hormone imbalance that causes them to become anaemic and subsequently die.
